FARM SINCE 1492 Masseria Lilei dates back to the end of the 15th century and benefited from successive expansions until the early 1800s. This ancient fortified farmhouse has a quadrangular tower and a series of rooms which, built in different eras, bear witness to the architectural characteristics of each period. In the past, these fortified structures were placed in strategic points of Salento to defend the territory from enemy incursions from the sea. Furthermore, they offered shelter to the inhabitants of the countryside and acted as a lookout for the historic city of Lecce, which was only a few kilometers away. The farm is located in the municipality of Lizzanello, a few kilometers away from the structure, whose village has ancient origins, dating back to the 13th century, when it was founded by refugees who fled from the sack of Lecce by Ottone IV of Saxony in 1210. The new city was called Licyanellus, which means Little Lecce, and became an important strategic center of the area. ACCOMMODATIONS Masseria Lilei welcomes guests in twelve rooms overlooking the internal courtyard, each with its own unique history and architectural style. Some rooms have the classic star vaults, others instead have pavilion ceilings, and some still have crossed arches and ceilings in wood and terracotta tiles. For those seeking more privacy and tranquillity, the Masseria also offers a farmhouse in the vineyard with two other bedrooms, which overlook the woods and surrounding olive grove. GOOD MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE Staying in Masseria Lieli means smelling the smells and flavors of Mediterranean cuisine as soon as you wake up in the morning. In fact, in the kitchen of the Masseria, already in the early morning the air is full of aromas and scents of the Salento tradition. The farm's garden supplies fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables which are used for the preparation of breakfast. Already during breakfast the basil sauce is already boiling, in preparation for lunch, while the flour and eggs are mixed to create fresh pasta, such as orecchiette and gnocchi alla sage. The thyme and rosemary are used to enhance the flavor of the meat, while the tomatoes and rocket are ready to be served in a large white ceramic. Local cheeses, such as those from Otranto, are particularly fragrant and the prickly pears are cleaned and prepared to be enjoyed. In the pantry of the Masseria, it is possible to buy local products, such as oil, wine, taralli, creams, olives, jams and honey, to bring home the flavors of the countryside and the Salento culinary tradition. A unique culinary experience, where the authentic flavors and intense aromas of Puglia blend to create an unforgettable experience.
